Theia looks proud. Standing tall, with gleaming armour around her body, and a new sword sheathed beside her hip, I can’t help but shed a tear for her triumph. I mean…she survived. She did it.

And Neo’s gangly figure shoots me a shy wave from the dais where all the new guards are standing. Focusing back on his new role, he stands straighter as Lord Bright begins his speech about the new guards’ duties from this moment on.

I zone out, and count all the Elementals that remain. The survivors have decided to stay as guards, leaving me to be the only one to move forward towards the third and most deadly trial.

Except one.

I don’t see the snarly face and hate-filled eyes of a certain Firelink. Is it possible that Rorik abandoned the process? I really don’t think so. I wouldn’t be so lucky.

Ah, he’s right beside his father, the renowned Head of the Guardians. Ugh.

Which means that the bastard and I will be alone in Moonlight Forest for the soul trial. Yeah, because binding your soul to a wild Dusk’s is easy peasy, right? Nevermind having a murderer trailing you while trying to bond.

Luckily, he ignores me, and I move my attention to my friends’ success. The ceremony is almost done, all novel guards with a newfound feeling of relief displayed across their faces. Their process is over.

Lucky bastards.

“I missed you last night, Little Terror.” Ryder’s whisper tickles my temple, and a rogue smile escapes my face. I lean into his strong frame protecting my back, inhaling his scent. Relaxing a bit.

“Right, you looked extremely worried while drooling on top of your sister’s head.”

He stifles a cough, caught unsuspecting by my comment, and I cover my mouth with my hand to pretend I’m not laughing at his obvious discomfort. He pinches my sides, and I silence a yelp. A few individuals turn and glare at us. We’re such rude witnesses.

I glare back at Ryder and I mouth stop to his impish face. He looks so boyish it’s delightful. If he and Jade had been left to grow up in the Fae Realm with their family, would he be more like this? Unburdened. Fun. Not filled with this constant guilt that tastes like tar in my mouth.

I don’t have the time to think about it further, because we’re interrupted by hands clapping, and people cheering for the new members of the Keep.

As I step towards the dais with a grin tugging at my cheeks and Ryder’s hand on mine, mist envelops me.

Apparently, the third trial waits for nothing and no one.
